Kepler Track (bezocht in april 2019)

Review geschreven door Anne te Dorsthorst op 17 november 2019

The Kepler Track is a 60km loop in Fiordland National Park, New Zealand. The route is very well maintained and the huts are excellently located to break down the days. There are few camping spots so for those looking to camp, be prepared for some very long days.
In my opinion you should best hike the track anti-clockwise so you have the hardest parts on your first couple of days. And most importanly, the views are in front of you most of the time.
The track can be reduced from 60km to 45km by taking a water taxi to brod bay campsite and arranging a pick up from Rainbow reach car park.
Day 1, is the shortest part of the track, most of this you will spend climbing through the woods. The New Zealand woods are magical and feel like something straight out of a fairy tail.
Day 2, is the most sought-after part of the trail. Make sure to get an early start to make the most of the best light. The track starts with an uphill climb to the highest point of the trail, if you are lucky you might spot a Kea! On this part there is a short extension to the summit of Mount Luxmore. It's an easy climb that will take about 30 minutes extra. The 360 views at the top are amazing, so my advice to you is: don't miss it! After this you will end up on the best part of the Kepler track, a wide ridgeline with drops on either side and great views over the mountains and Lake Te Anau’s South Fiord. The aren't many views on day 1 and 3, so take it easy and enjoy it this day! After a few hours the ridgeline starts to lose elevation and brings you back into the fairy woods. Before you know it you’ll be at the Iris Burn Hut. If you still have some energy left, there is another 45 minute return flat path to the base of the Iris Burn Falls.
Day 3: If you decided to skip the last part of the trail, like I did, this will be your last day. It will be long but it isn’t arduous. The trail leads you through the forest the path has a few short up hill sections but nothing compared to the previous day.

Pluspunten Kepler Track

  • Beautiful views
  • Rewarding hike
  • Durin hiking season huts with running water

Minpunten Kepler Track

  • Huts need to be booked well in advance >3 months
  • huts cost 130$ a night
Ultieme tip: Hike the track anti-clockwise for better views. Reduce the track lenght by taking a water taxi to brodbay campsite and a shuttle pickup from Rainbow reach car park.
